What is monkeypox virus- This is a rare disease caused by infection with the monkeypox virus. The monkeypox virus is spreading rapidly all over the world.

According to the WHO chief, more than 7,000 cases have been confirmed in 60 countries, with Europe currently the outbreak’s epicentre.

Monkeypox is endemic in some Central and West African countries, but Tedros said the pathogen is now being detected in non-African countries as well.

This virus has begun showing its effect in big countries of the world. Of course, this is a chronic disease, but after getting its first case a few days ago, it has spread to about twenty countries in a very short time.

The monkeypox virus was first discovered in 1958. When two outbreaks of the smallpox-like disease appeared in the colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox’. The first case of monkeypox in human was reported in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

In view of the increasing case of monkeypox infection, a World Health Organization (WHO) official has said that the right measures should be taken at the right time to prevent the case of monkeypox. Other countries should share vaccine data with everyone.

He said that no one is aware of the extent of this disease. But we need to be vigilant so that we can detect as many cases as possible.

He said that if we start finding a way to stop this infection from now, then perhaps it can be easier to control it.  This is very necessary to make people aware. He said that this infection is still in its early stages.

Looking at the risk of community spread, he said that we fear that this infection may spread rapidly in the community, but it is very difficult to detect at this time. He told that till now more than 20 cases have come before him.

Many patients are not aware of this infection. He said that we know, that this is due to normal virus change. And we are investigating this infection so that it can be found out how it originated and how dangerous it is.

The Director-General of WHO said that out of 39 countries, there are seven countries where cases of monkeypox have been reported for years, while there are 32 new affected countries.

The monkeypox virus is a double-stranded DNA virus that is related to the Orthopoxvirus genus. By the way, the family of this virus is related to the family Poxviridae.

Ways to avoid monkeypox-

 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  CDC)have given ways to avoid monkeypox.

1-Avoid contact with animals – Avoid contact with animals that can harbor the virus. This means that you have to avoid contact with animals and sick people or have been found dead in areas where monkeypox occurs.

2-The virus is also spread through the infected and the things used by them, so you should avoid coming into contact with any material that a sick animal may have come into contact with, such as bedding.

3-Wash hands thoroughly after contact with infected animals or humans. For eg. it is better to wash your hands with soap & water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

4-social distance and use a mask
